Programs in Industrial Mathematics

Description

The School of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota with the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, an NSF national institute, offers several programs that provide training for students who wish to seek careers in business and industry. The programs are collaboratively administered by the Minnesota Center for Industrial Mathematics and the Institute for Mathematics and its Application. A key component of the program is a required internship at a company during the study. The internship serves several purposes: (1) it broadens the student's experience; (2) it provides a recruiting opportunity for the company; and (3) it provides the department with new research and funding opportunities. Students who complete the program leave with the necessary skills to join the industry and business workforce. Industry, in partnership with the Institute, sponsors a postdoc for a 2-year appointment during which the postdoc devotes half of his/her time on an industrial project of the company. The postdoc benefits by obtaining research experience and contact with the company. The company benefits from the research provided by the postdoc, and high level scientific interaction with the Institute.
