The CREATE program (Creating
Research Examples Across the Teaching Enterprise) at
Stanford enlists teaching assistants to serve as a bridge
between faculty research and undergraduate teaching.
Participants produce 750 - 1,000 word statements explaining
their research in ways that can be understood by students
taking beginning undergraduate courses in the participant's
discipline or a general education course open to all
students. Such statements become part of a database that is
organized by discipline and accessible through the internet.
Connecting the research of faculty and graduate students to
the material taught in beginning undergraduate courses is
particularly important at research universities. For
everyone involved, the program places their studies and work
in a larger, more relevant context. Often, graduate students
are invited to present their individual work in
undergraduate classes providing a valuable teaching and
learning experience.

The CREATE program gave rise to I-RITE, "Integrating
Research Into the Teaching Environment." In the first cohort in
early 1999, 13 volunteers from 13 different departments pioneered the
composition of these statements. In addition, a subset of the
participants became part of a research presentation database consisting
of individuals willing to make themselves available, by invitation, to
undergraduate classes for brief presentations and discussions on their
research.
During the second cohort (fall and winter of 1999-2000), the program
expanded to include 25 additional PhD students from engineering, the
natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. The
review process was enhanced to include Stanford undergraduates and
faculty from both Stanford and other institutions.
The program is expanding the program during the 2000-2001 academic
year to over 100 participants. The program also expects to increase the
research presentation pool to at least 25 students and to make these
students available to faculty across the disciplines.
