Professional Development Activities: Charts
(Click here for Summary and Analysis)
Questions 7-9 of the survey asked participants to provide input concerning the availability and utility of a
variety of Ph.D. professional development activities. The survey questions were as follows:
- Which of the following classes, programs, training, seminars, and/or activities were
provided to you during your Ph.D. experience to prepare you for your
professional life? Check all that apply.
-
Which of the previously marked (in question
7) classes, programs, training, seminars, and/or activities provided to you
during your Ph.D. experience were particularly helpful in preparing
you for your career?
-
What classes, programs, training, seminars, and/or
activities that would have better prepared you for your career were not
provided to you during your Ph.D. experience? Check all the apply. [The phrase
"Desired" has been substituted for "would have better prepared
you for your career"
for conciseness in the text and charts below.]
The list of activities, which was the same for all three of the above
questions, are listed below. (Click on an activity to view the statistical
results.)
The results of questions 7-9 are presented below by individual activity. The data presented in the individual
activity charts are:
- Column 1: "Provided" = Total number and percent of
respondents who stated that the given activity was provided.
- Column 2: "Particularly Helpful" = Total number and percent of
respondents for whom the activity was provided and who identified this activity as particularly helpful.
- Column 3: "Not Provided" = Total number and percent of
respondents who reported that the given activity was not provided.
- Column 4: "Desired" = Total number and percent of respondents who
reported that the activity was not provided and identified the activity as one that would have better
prepared them for their career.
For example, from Chart 1 below (Dissertation Planning/Writing) one finds that
a little over half of the respondents (52.1%) stated that dissertation
planning/writing was provided. Of those who were provided with dissertation
planning/writing, 48.9% identified it as particularly helpful in their professional
development. Of those who had no
dissertation planning/writing available (47.9%), 46.9% felt that
they would have been better prepared had it been available. The phrase
"Desired" has been substituted for "would have better prepared
you for your career"
for conciseness in the charts below.
