Date: October 9, 2002
Subject: Re-envisioning the Ph.D. Update

Exciting programs, initiatives, and resources continue to emerge across the country and the world related to doctoral education. Below are highlights from our latest News and Updates http://www.grad.washington.edu/envision/news/current_news.html. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has announced its new project, the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID). CID is inviting universities to participate in this initiative by developing experiments that produce stewards of the discipline. (Application deadline October 15!)

Re-envisioning has developed two new resources for faculty and students. The International Resources includes a collection of sites that offer international resources in funding, partnerships, and programs. The University of Washington, following the lead of Arizona State University and others, has published a Distinguished Graduate Mentor Statements booklet. The booklet is a compilation of personal mentor statements from recipients of the UW’s Distinguished Graduate Mentor award and provides first-hand experience and advice on how to effectively mentor doctoral students. If you have such a set of statements in your organization, or institution, please email us with a description.

Also featured on our site this month is the newly released study by Choy and Geis (2002) “Student Financing of Graduate and First-Professional Education”. The report uses data from the 1999–2000 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS, 2000), to profile students in various degree programs and examine how they paid for their education, with particular attention to their use of teaching and research assistantships.

Emeritus Vice Provost Alvin Kwiram presents a challenge to academic leaders in September’s (2002) issue of the Journal of Chemical Education, “The goal of advancing the frontier of knowledge does not need to change, but the means by which one reaches that goal and the way in which the students participate in that process can be worlds apart.” Professor Kwiram presents a compelling challenge for all those involved in preparing doctoral students.
