Subject: Re-envisioning the Ph.D.

An update on some of the recent activities that contribute to re-envisioning doctoral education:

The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation just announced (6-1-01) the names of the pilot research universities they will be working with on “The Responsive Ph.D. Initiative.”  You can view the list from our web front page: http://www.depts.washington.edu/envision and link to more information on their site.  Re-envisioning is partnering with Woodrow Wilson to provide print materials, web resources, Promising Practices and outcomes from the Seattle Re-envisioning Conference, and to provide input from those who fund and those who hire Ph.D.s.  The goal of the Woodrow Wilson initiative is to develop models to improve doctoral education that can be shared with all of the stakeholders involved in doctoral education.

This month on our web site, we are featuring numerous articles and presentations that are informing the national/international conversation about Ph.D. reform.  Andrew Kaldor's (Director, Exxon/Mobil Research & Engineering) Associated Western Universities presentation "Re-envisioning Graduate Education in Science and Engineering" provides an industry perspective.  Jerry Gaff's (Vice President, Association of American Colleges & Universities) address at the University of Missouri’s 11th Annual Teaching Renewal Conference looks at a summary of what is happening in doctoral reform efforts.  We are also featuring pieces by Jolene Koester (President--California State University Northridge) and the Associated New American Colleges to represent what characteristics teaching-intensive colleges and universities believe they need in the new faculty they seek.

This summer we will be redesigning our front page and incorporating a search capability and new web design.  We'd like to invite you to give us comments, suggestions, or questions that we can consider in the redesign process:  http://catalyst.washington.edu/webtools/webq/survey.cgi?user=envision&survey=2  We stand ready to make the web site a place where we can all learn from each other.

We appreciate your partnership and help in advancing the national/international  conversation to re-envisioning the Ph.D.
