Subject: Re-envisioning the Ph.D.
Update
The Re-envisioning the Ph.D. project is at work adding resources for stakeholders of doctoral education. We hope
you’ll peruse our newly updated Studies page http://www.grad.washington.edu/envision/resources/studies.html.
More and more researchers are taking a careful look at doctoral education. If there are additional studies that we
haven’t included (and would be valuable for our audience), please let us know.
This month’s headlines include the new National Science Board’s Science and Engineering Indicators
2002. The Science and Engineering Indicators provides a broad base of quantitative information about U.S. education,
research, and the marketplace in science, engineering, and technology. The Re-envisioning the Ph.D. project is
mentioned under doctoral reform in Volume 1, Chapter 2, page 31 (http://nsf.gov/sbe/srs/seind02/pdf/c02.pdf).
We invite you to review other new articles on our “Current News and Updates” at:
http://www.grad.washington.edu/envision/news/current_news.html.
We are also pleased to report that our newly released Ph.D. Resources (http://www.grad.washington.edu/envision/phd/index.html) have received over 5,000 visits last month. The web pages
include resources for doctoral students on obtaining the Ph.D. and obtaining employment. Pages contain topics on
surviving graduate school, choosing a committee member, preparing for comprehensive exams, teaching, research,
publishing, writing CVs and resumes, jobs, funding, and more! Please pass these resources on to as many doctoral
students as possible.
Our Promising Practice collection (innovative practices and resources in doctoral education) is growing each month. We currently have over 330 practices from over 147 institutions and organizations. If you have any innovative
practices not included in our collection, especially in the areas of University Collaborations, E-learning, or
General and Final Exams, we would appreciate your submissions. The submission process is very quick. We just need
one to two paragraphs describing the practice or resource with current contact information. Take a minute to
submit your institution or organization’s practice at:
http://www.grad.washington.edu/envision/practices/promprac_submit.html.
We welcome your comments at envision@u.washington.edu
and appreciate your continued participation and input as we partner to transform doctoral education.
