Subject: Re-envisioning the Ph.D.
Update
We are pleased to report that we are averaging over 200,000 hits a month on our website! Our
clearinghouse of ideas is being used by a wide range of folks involved in preparing, funding, and
hiring Ph.D.’s and by aspiring and current doctoral students. We are gratified that so many
people are interested in re-envisioning the Ph.D. for the 21st Century.
In fact, since we have received so much traffic on our “Ph.D. Career Resources” site, we are
updating and expanding these resources into two divisions: “Obtaining a
Ph.D.” and “Obtaining Employment.” They are linked off of our homepage:
http://www.grad.washington.edu/envision
under “Ph.D. Resources” http://www.grad.washington.edu/envision/phd/index.html
This is one of the most comprehensive collections of doctoral student resources currently available on-line. Our
goal is to get the information on these sites into the hands of doctoral students in order to
help them not just survive but thrive in graduate school and beyond. Please forward this email
to interested colleagues and students.
This month’s headlines include an update on the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation’s
Responsive Ph.D. Initiative—exciting news. We are featuring an interesting article by Kathryn
Adams on what employing institutions want in new faculty and the preliminary results of the
American Historical Society’s Survey of doctoral programs.
In addition, our new menu drop-down feature allows for easier navigation of our website. It is
now possible to position your pointer over a menu item, and the subcategories under it will
become visible. By clicking on the subcategory you are interested in, you can skip the step of
loading intermediate pages.
As always, we invite you to review the “Current News and Updates”:

and we welcome new Promising Practices from your institution or organization: http://www.grad.washington.edu/envision/practices/promprac_submit.html
Please send comments to: envision@u.washington.edu
We appreciate your continued participation in the effort to effect change in doctoral education.
