Summary The Graduate School Medal is a $10,000 fellowship to be awarded to a PhD, DMA, AudD, DNP, DPT,or EdD candidate who displays an exemplary commitment to both the University and its larger community. The Graduate School Medal recognizes the “scholar-citizen" whose academic expertise and social awareness are integrated in a way that demonstrates active civic engagement and a capacity to promote political, cultural and social change. The Medal recipient(s) will be announced at the annual Fellowship Reception honoring national graduate fellowship awardees. The Medal is funded from the UW Graduate Fellowship Fund, which is supported primarily by annual gifts from alumni and friends of the UW. One or two medals will be awarded each year. Eligibility Any graduate student who has achieved candidacy for a PhD, DMA, or EdD and who will be enrolled during the following academic year is eligible for The Graduate School Medal. nomination
procedure
Doctoral candidates may be nominated from departments or programs that lie within the jurisdiction of The Graduate School. These are the PhD, DMA, and EdD programs. The JD, MD, PharmD, and DDS programs are not included. Each nomination—to be submitted to the Dean of The Graduate School consists of the following (sent in paper or electronically, as noted):
These materials are mandatory, however, if the student wishes to include additional references that address the impacts of their work, up to two additional letters of recommendation may be appended (electronic). Nominations meeting initial review requirements will be examined by The Graduate School Executive Staff (GSES). The GSES will select a pool of finalists to be forwarded to The Graduate School Council for consideration. The Council will review the finalists’ applications, conduct finalist interviews at the February 21, 2007 meeting, and make the final selection. Applications must be submitted to The Graduate School by January 28, 2007 to be accepted for consideration for the following academic year. Awardees will be notified as soon as the selection process is completed so that they can make arrangements to attend the fellowship reception at the University of Washington Club in spring 2008. Criteria for selection In addition to the minimum criteria listed above, nominees will be expected to have demonstrated—and/or show potential to demonstrate—an ability to integrate intellectual talent and social concern. Candidates should apply their disciplinary expertise to the world around them, be committed to “problem-oriented” scholarship and its requisite interdisciplinary nature, and seek integration of the academy and the public/private sectors. The Graduate School Medal recipient will be a scholar-citizen who illustrates the synergy between graduate-level achievement in the University and social or cultural productivity outside. Terms of award The Graduate School Medal will be awarded at the reception spring 2008. The award will be paid as a lump-sum stipend at the beginning of the following autumn quarter. Medal recipients are expected to participate in various Graduate School events but are not required to provide work or service to the University. Means of support Funds for The Graduate School Medal are provided by the UW Graduate Fellowship Fund, which receives annual giving campaign gifts to The Graduate School. |
