Deans, Directors and Chairs of Degree Granting Units:

The Graduate School is pleased offer the 2008 Graduate School Medal for PhD, DMA, and EdD candidates who have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to both the University and its larger community.  This award, described in the attached announcement, is made possible by annual private gifts to The Graduate School. The medal honors scholar-citizens whose work demonstrates a substantial engagement not only with the discipline(s), but who integrate their expertise in service to the larger community and, indeed, the world.  Each recipient receives the Medal and $10,000.  One Medal recipient will be selected for the 2008 year.

Various studies of doctoral education, including the recently completed Re-envisioning the PhD project initiated in The Graduate School, have highlighted the need to emphasize the societal influence of doctoral degree recipients. The doctorate is more than an advanced research certification; it should also be acknowledged as an important contribution to a well-functioning society. The Graduate School Medal acknowledges the impact that doctoral students have across and beyond the boundaries of their academic discipline(s).

I urge you to share the attached announcement with PhD, DMA, and EdD candidates in your unit who successfully link scholarship with local or global citizenship. Nominations are due in The Graduate School no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 28, 2008.

Sincerely yours,
Suzanne T. Ortega
Vice Provost and Dean
