ARCS Alumni Profile

Emily White

EmilyWhite

As a UW doctoral student in Epidemiology in 1981, Dr. Emily White was the first woman recipient of a fellowship from the Seattle Chapter of the Achievement Rewards College Scientists' Foundation (ARCS). The ARCS Fellowship was significant to this mother of a young child because it helped her pay graduate school expenses. Emily has fond memories of the ARCS anniversary luncheon held on the top floor of the Rainier Tower. She values the opportunity to have met the founding members of this all-volunteer women's organization and found them to be inspiring community leaders and dynamic fundraisers.

After graduate school, Emily was selected for a joint faculty appointment at the University of Washington Department of Epidemiology and the Cancer Prevention Program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. For the past 25 years, Dr. White has conducted research on the relation of diet, vitamin supplement use and physical activity to cancer risk. She has been principal investigator on many National Cancer Institute grants and has published almost 200 scientific papers and a textbook. Dr. White is also an active teacher and administrator at the University of Washington. She was Director of the Epidemiology Graduate Program at UW for 10 years, and in that position, greatly appreciated the role of the ARCS Fellowship Program in helping to attract the best students to UW. Emily is currently Professor of Epidemiology and Associate Dean for Research at the UW School of Public Health.
