Required Application Materials for International Applicants
Should you decide to apply to the University of Washington the following documents must be mailed to the office of Graduate Admissions.
- A copy of the UW Graduate School Application.
- Send international transcripts with degree statement, including date of
graduation and title of academic degree awarded. All coursework with grades
issued for each year completed must be submitted for proper evaluation.
All international records are considered official if they have been certified
or attested and must be submitted in the original language
accompanied by an official English translation.
Translations must be literal, complete versions of original records, and the
documents must be translated by a university, a government official, or an
official translation service. You cannot do your own translation.
In some circumstances, we will accept exact copies duly certified as such by
the Registrar of a regionally accredited institution in the United States
previously attended by the applicant. Such copies must be sent
directly from the U.S. institution in a sealed envelope.
- Bachelor or higher degree from the U.S. and Canada: You should ask
the Registrar to mail official degree transcripts in a sealed envelope to
this office.
- A satisfactory command of the English language is required for admission
to the University of Washington Graduate School. Applicants, including
international applicants, permanent residents, immigrants and transfer
students, who are not citizens of the United States on the date of
admission, and whose native language is other than English, must meet this
requirement. No waivers of this English proficiency requirement may be

NOTE: ONLY the following countries are exempt from proof
of English proficiency: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New
Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
Applicants who intend to apply for a teaching assistantship or an
appointment that does not specify whether duties are for teaching or
research is required to meet three conditions of the TA/appointment who are
not U.S. citizens:
1. Meet English-language proficiency requirements
2. Meet spoken English proficiency requirements
3. Fully participate in the Teaching Assistant Program at the
Center for Instructional
Development and Research (CIDR)

- Complete, sign and return the University of Washington Statement of
Financial Ability form. The University of Washington Statement of
Financial Ability form is available to individuals who have successfully
submitted an on-line application with fee to the Graduate School.
Include official / original financial documentation. Any sponsor or
family member providing financial support MUST ALSO sign this form.
Students applying for Teaching or Research Assistantships MUST complete this
form. Information in the "Dependents Section" of this form is
necessary for a complete and accurate visa application for the dependent(s)
you declare upon U.S. entry. An incomplete form will delay a formal
offer of admission. Faxed, photocopied, or notarized copies ARE NOT
acceptable.
You can complete the UW Statement of Financial Ability form and send
it with original financial documentation later. However, this could
result in a delay of a formal offer of admission. It is highly
recommended that you complete the financial ability requirement as soon as
possible.
- International applicants currently residing in the US: Send photocopies of
all I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility Form) with the F-1 stamp or DS-2019
(Certificate of Eligibility) with J-1 stamp or any current visa status forms
issued to you.
- If you are requesting an DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility Form) for J-1
status, please provide the following information: City of Birth, legal
permanent resident of what country, present position in that country (i.e.
student/faculty, as well as the name of the institution, if employed by a
company, name of employer, etc.) If you are currently holding the J-1 visa,
please let this office know if you are planning to return home before coming
to this University. This information is important in order to issue an
accurate visa application form.
