Required Materials for International Applicants

Should you decide to apply to the University of Washington the following documents must be mailed to the office of Graduate Admissions.

  • A copy of the UW Graduate School Application.

  • Send international transcripts with degree statement, including date of graduation and title of academic degree awarded. All coursework with grades issued for each year completed must be submitted for proper evaluation. All international records are considered official if they have been certified or attested and must be submitted in the original language accompanied by an official English translation.  Translations must be literal, complete versions of original records, and the documents must be translated by a university, a government official, or an official translation service.  You cannot do your own translation.  In some circumstances, we will accept exact copies duly certified as such by the Registrar of a regionally accredited institution in the United States previously attended by the applicant.  Such copies must be sent directly from the U.S. institution in a sealed envelope.

  • Bachelor or higher degree from the U.S. and Canada:  You should ask the Registrar to mail official degree transcripts in a sealed envelope to this office.

  • Proficiency in English is required for graduate study at the University of Washington. Therefore, every applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency. No waivers of this English proficiency requirement may be given. See Graduate School Memorandum #8 and English proficiency tests comparison tables for the University's policy.

Applicants who intend to apply for a teaching assistantship or an appointment that does not specify whether duties are for teaching or research is required to meet three conditions of the TA/appointment who are not native speakers of English:

NOTE:  See Graduate School Memorandum #15 for the University's policy.

  • Complete, sign and return the University of Washington Statement of Financial Ability form.  The University of Washington Statement of Financial Ability form is available to individuals who have successfully submitted an on-line application with fee to the Graduate School.  Include official / original financial documentation.  Any sponsor or family member providing financial support MUST ALSO sign this form.

Students applying for Teaching or Research Assistantships MUST complete this form.  Information in the "Dependents Section" of this form is necessary for a complete and accurate visa application for the dependent(s) you declare upon U.S. entry.  An incomplete form will delay a formal offer of admission.  Faxed, photocopied, or notarized copies ARE NOT acceptable.

You can complete the UW Statement of Financial Ability form and send it with original financial documentation later.  However, this could result in a delay of a formal offer of admission.  It is highly recommended that you complete the financial ability requirement as soon as possible.

  • International applicants currently residing in the US: Send photocopies of all I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility Form) with the F-1 stamp or DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility) with J-1 stamp or any current visa status forms issued to you.

  • If you are requesting an DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility Form) for J-1 status, please provide the following information: City of Birth, legal permanent resident of what country, present position in that country (i.e. student/faculty, as well as the name of the institution, if employed by a company, name of employer, etc.) If you are currently holding the J-1 visa, please let this office know if you are planning to return home before coming to this University. This information is important in order to issue an accurate visa application form.
