The University of Washington’s Graduate School Council is an elected body that advises the Dean of the Graduate School on graduate education policies, related issues, and recommendations from program reviews.  The Council acts on behalf of the Graduate Faculty and has legislative authority for all matters pertaining to graduate education requiring a vote of elected representatives.  The Council's recommendations form the basis for all new graduate degree authorizations by the Board of Regents.

The Council's primary responsibility is to evaluate the regularly scheduled academic program reviews that occur each year. The Council studies each completed review and discusses the results with members of the Department, the School or College, and the review committee.  In evaluating the identified strengths, weaknesses, and needs for each program the Council makes recommendations to the Dean that are forwarded to the Provost for consideration. Council meetings are generally conducted on the first and third Thursday of the month (except when the academic quarter begins during the first week of the month), from 2:30 to 4:30pm.

Representation on the Council includes twelve members of the Graduate Faculty and one graduate student, the current president of the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS).  Ten of the faculty members are from the Seattle campus, representing five different disciplinary groups: Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Applied Sciences and Engineering, and Health Sciences. UW Bothell and UW Tacoma each elect one representative to the Council. Annually, about one third of the Council seats are vacated; members of the graduate faculty in each of the academic areas are responsible for nominating and voting for their representatives.  Council members (with the exception of the graduate student) serve for three years.
