Graduate School Memorandum No. 40 (Revised September 2000)

Required Standardized Examinations
(GRE, TOEFL, TSE, GMAT)

GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for admission as a graduate student except in the following circumstances:

  • Applicants to Art, Dance, Drama, and to the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Music.
  • Applicants to the masters or doctoral programs in the School of Business Administration who must submit scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
  • Applicants holding earned doctoral degrees (such as Ph.D., D.D.S., M.D., Ed.D., J.D.) from an accredited U.S. institution.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

A satisfactory command of the English language is required for admission to the University of Washington Graduate School.  Applicants, including transfers, who are not citizens of the United States on the date of admission and whose native language is other than English, must meet the following terms and conditions:

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination, or the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (MLT) is required unless one of the specific exceptions stated in below is met.  The TOEFL is currently offered in both a written and computerized (TOEFLC) format. The institutional version of the MLT may also be taken at the University of Washington to meet this requirement.  No waivers from this English Competency examination requirement may be given.

1. Exceptions:

·        Applicants who are citizens of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom.

·        Non United States citizens who have received a bachelor’s or advanced degree from an accredited U.S. institution or from an institution in countries listed above.

2. A minimum score of 580 (TOEFL) or 237 (TOEFLC), or 90 on the MLT, is required for unconditional admission as a graduate student.

3. Students may be admitted by petition with scores between 500 (TOEFL)/173 (TOEFLC) and 580 (TOEFL)/237 (TOEFLC) or MLT scores between 80 and 90.  Students admitted in this manner must take English as a Second Language (ESL) courses upon matriculation.  Matriculated students may exempt themselves from some or all of these course requirements by retaking the TOEFL, the MLT, or the diagnostic test administered at the University of Washington.  This requirement must be met before a degree will be conferred.

4. In rare cases, applicants who score below the minimum scores may be admitted upon the recommendation of the department that the applicants has demonstrated extraordinary academic merit by prior performance and that language deficiencies would not prevent the prospective student from participating fully in a graduate program.  Such students must fulfill the same requirements as those listed in paragraph 3 above.

Test of Spoken English (TSE).  International Teaching Assistants whose native language is other than English must achieve a score of 55 on this test before they can assume classroom duties.  See Graduate School Memorandum #8, “English Language Competence for Admission to Graduate School”, for further information.
