Each year, one third of the seats on the Graduate School Council
are open for election. Elections are conducted at the end of each Spring
Quarter, with the new members beginning their three-year terms the following
Autumn Quarter. Faculty members with a Graduate Faculty appointment in a
unit from the larger Group are eligible to vote for the
subsection representative. Graduate Faculty with affiliate or retired appointments are not voting members.
Spring 2008 Elections
Elections for open seats on the Graduate School Council will be conducted during
Spring Quarter 2008. Positions will be filled for openings in Groups I (A),
II (B),
III (A), and IV (A). Nominations for candidates
will be accepted
until May 1 from: (1) a nominating committee, appointed by
the Graduate School,
of Graduate Faculty from the group; and (2) a petition carrying the signature of at least
10 Graduate
Faculty from the group. Candidates must Graduate Faculty with a primary or
joint faculty appointment in the appropriate section (A or
B) of the group, while all eligible graduate faculty in the group are invited to
vote in the election and nominate candidates.
The University of Washington's Graduate School Council includes
twelve members of the Graduate Faculty and one graduate student representative. Ten of the
faculty members come from the Seattle campus, representing seven different
groups: Arts and Humanities, Natural
Sciences, Social Sciences, Applied Sciences and Engineering, Health
Sciences, UW Bothell, and UW Tacoma. To ensure broad representation on the Council, each group
from UW Seattle is
subdivided by discipline into two sections, with one representative per section. UW Bothell and UW Tacoma each
elect one representative to the Council.
Primary Graduate School Council
Member Responsibilities:
Each Council member (with the exception of the graduate student) serves for
three years.
Assuming responsibility as a member requires attending Council meetings for the
entire academic year. Beyond attendance and meeting preparation, there is
no additional service requirement. Council meetings are generally
conducted on the first and third Thursday of the month (except when the
academic quarter begins during the first week of the month), from 2:30 to 4:30pm.
