GUIDELINES FOR UNITS UNDER REVIEW (revised 1/2008) The following guidelines have been developed by the Graduate School in consultation with relevant dean(s)/vice chancellor. Please feel free to contact the Office of Academic Programs (OAP) in The Graduate School, whenever there are questions. The self-study document is the unit's main opportunity to provide background information about the programs under review to the review committee, faculty councils, dean(s)/vice chancellor, and provost. It should describe the status of the programs clearly and concisely for non-specialists. Because of the limited time available for the site visit, the on-campus members of the review committee are encouraged to meet with the unit chair/director in advance to clarify important issues. The unit should provide any additional information requested by the committee beyond the self-study. The academic unit, in consultation with OAP and the review committee, is responsible for coordinating the site visit schedule. The committee should meet with faculty, students, and staff broadly representative of the programs under review. The unit chair/director should review the proposed schedule with the committee chair to ensure that any committee preferences are met. To preserve the integrity of the review process and avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, the unit may not entertain members of the committee or extend invitations of a professional nature, such as to give lectures, within the unit, from the time the committee is constituted until the committee report is completed. The unit chair/director should make the review committee report available upon receipt to every faculty member connected with the programs under review, and coordinate faculty discussion. The unit chair/director should then prepare written response to the report. In its written response the unit may address any points in the report with which it is not in agreement. The final decision on content of the review committee’s report rests with the committee. Reviews of existing programs should be viewed positively, as an opportunity for the unit to conduct healthy self-examination, demonstrate future needs, and receive constructive criticism.
